The Margaret Thatcher Scholarship Trust
The Margaret Thatcher Scholarship Trust has been established at her alma mater, Somerville College at the University of Oxford, to create a living legacy for one of the leading political icons of the modern age.  Where most of the prominent global scholarships programmes are for post-graduate studies, the Thatcher Scholarships will be open to all, at undergraduate and post-graduate level, regardless of the subject of their course, and without regard to national, cultural or ethnic origin.  The Thatcher Scholarship Programme will allow those who might not dream of undertaking undergraduate or postgraduate studies at all, let alone at the University of Oxford, which is among the top five universities in the world, to set out on the path to success.   It will bring them all the benefits of learning from world-leading scholars, an education in academic rigour and intellectual curiosity, the networks and friendships that will open doors for them for the rest of their lives.  We will support students who, through academic excellence, intelligence, perseverance, courage and hard work, have the potential to create change where it is needed. In time, they will become a body of Scholars that will reach into the courtrooms, boardrooms, newsrooms, hospitals, NGOs, schools, universities and governments around the world, forging and molding a better future for their generation and those that follow.

Lord Powell of Bayswater, her former Private Secretary, long-time friend and adviser, told of her delight when consulted about the scholarships:

“She was plainly delighted and honoured by the thought that holders of such scholarships bearing her name would carry forward the reputation of the College to         which she owed so much herself.”
